The Top 5 Car Steering Component Problems (And What You Should Do About Them)

Car steering components can be one of the essential parts of the car, but they can also be one of the most prone to wear and tear over time. Here are five common problems that can affect your car’s steering components and how to fix them if they arise.

1. Loose Steering Wheel

A loose steering wheel is a common car steering component problem. It can be caused by various things, including a loose steering column bolt, worn-out linkages, or a damaged rack and pinion. The good news is that it’s usually an easy fix. Your mechanic can generally tighten the steering wheel by adjusting the bolts on the steering column or replacing the linkages. If the problem is with the rack and pinion, you’ll need to have it repaired or replaced.

2. Grinding Noises From the Front End

If you’re hearing grinding noises from your car’s front end while turning, worn-out CV joints typically cause this. The good news is that this problem is relatively easy for an experienced mechanic to fix, which will involve replacing the CV joints.

3. Difficulty in Turning

If your car is having trouble making tight turns, it’s likely due to low power steering fluid. First, check the power steering fluid levels and add more if necessary. If that doesn’t fix the problem, you may need to have your mechanic replace the power steering pump or one of the hoses. Keep in mind that your car should not be low on power steering fluid; if it is, you have a leak somewhere.

4. Difficulty Returning to the Center

One of the most common car steering component problems is difficulty returning to the center. This happens when the wheels are not aligned properly and can cause the car to pull to one side. Malfunctioning ball joints or kingpins can also cause this issue, but usually, it’s caused by misalignment.

5. Squeaks and Rattles While Driving

One of the most common car steering component problems is squeaks and screeches while turning. Several things can cause this, but a loose or damaged power steering belt is the most common culprit. To fix this, your mechanic will tighten or replace the belt.

Your car’s steering system usually gives you several years of trouble-free use, but it can occasionally experience problems. See your mechanic immediately if you notice any steering component problems.
