Is It OK to Drive On Empty?

We have all had those days. Getting to work this morning was tough, as traffic was a nightmare. The day at the office was as long as it was stressful, and now traffic on the way home is somehow worse than it was in the morning. To top it all off, you see that your gas light is activated, indicating that it is time to stop and fill up. You decide that you don’t want to deal with it, so you drive the rest of the way home on E, thinking you’ll just deal with it in the morning. But is this really a good idea?

You Might Run Out Of Gas

Drive anything – car, truck, or tractor – for long enough without filling it with gasoline, and eventually, it will run out of gas and stall. At that point, you either better start walking to the nearest service station, or hope your cell phone is charged enough to call a tow truck. Instead of dealing with that cost and embarrassment, why not just make the effort and keep your car filled with gasoline?

Your Fuel Pump Will Thank You

Your car’s fuel pump is designed to be submerged in gasoline at all times. When you drive on empty, it can cause your fuel pump to misfire or even malfunction. Any auto repair technician will tell you that fuel pump repairs and replacements don’t come cheap, so avoid this by simply keeping a quarter tank of gas in your vehicle at all times.

Make An Appointment

If you suspect long-term driving on empty has damaged your fuel pump, or you just want to make sure everything is fine, make an appointment with us. Our team will be happy to check your car for any problems. In the meantime, though, just make sure to keep at least a quarter tank of gas in your car at all times. We know it was a long day, but do yourself a favor and just stop for gas.
